Saheena

Saheena is an ideal snack whether you are on the go or breaking fast during the month of Ramadan or after a Hindu prayers. It has even been known to be part of the menu in some wedding. Saheena has been around for as long as street foods have been sold in Trinidad.

Saheena has been made from a combination of All purpose white flour, split peas flour, chopped dasheen bush, saffron powder , seasoning to name but a few.

The Saheena mixture is deep fried to a golden brown colour and served with or without channa together with the sauce of your choice be it mango, tamarind, pepper sauce or shandon beni.

There are however two variations of the Saheena, one is called chip up (the dasheen leaves are finely chipped and mixed with the batter (thicker consistency) and the other is where the dasheen leaves are rolled and cut into slices and dipped in batter then fried. No matter which variation delicious is the order of the day.

Some of the best Saheenas can be found in Debe South Trinidad.
